Ohio Department of Health (ODH) ED Comprehensive Care Project

Summa Health has been the recipient of multiple addiction-focused grants the past several years, with the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) serving as a particularly noteworthy funding source via its ED Comprehensive Care (EDCC) grants. Summa Health was a recipient of the original grant offered in 2018 and has participated in all subsequent grant cycles since then, including the most recent award, ED23, which is presently underway. The ED23 project entails the following objectives:

  • Provide services to the prehospital setting through a collaboration with the Akron Fire Department and Cleveland Clinic Akron General;

  • Enhance staff engagement within the four Summa Emergency Department (ED) Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs to strengthen and sustain community resources for follow-up and treatment;
  • Improve the triage and acute care nursing screening process to identify patients at risk for substance abuse;

  • Assess the impact of social determinants of health on program effectiveness, transitions of care and barriers to care;
  • Provide clinical and technical assistance to new and sustaining ED-based MAT programs across the state, as well as serve as a technical advisor to ODH, through a resource development website and speakers bureau.
