Medications for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) are typically designed to control or suppress acid production in the stomach. However, they don’t address the cause of GERD, a weak sphincter muscle, and can’t prevent reflux. As a safe and effective treatment alternative for GERD, the LINX® Reflux Management System has proven to eliminate dependence on medication and improve quality of life. And Summa Health is one of the first in the area to offer it.
LINX is a small flexible ring of magnets that opens to allow food and liquid down, then closes to prevent stomach contents from moving up. About the size of a quarter, it’s placed around your esophagus just above the stomach. The strength of the magnets helps keep the valve between your stomach and esophagus closed to prevent reflux. When you swallow, the magnets separate temporarily to allow food and liquid to pass into the stomach.
LINX is placed around the esophagus using a minimally invasive surgical procedure that lasts about an hour. The most common side effect is discomfort or difficulty swallowing, known as dysphagia, which is often temporary and a normal part of the healing process. Patients are encouraged to return to a normal diet as soon as tolerated as directed by their physician, and are generally able to return to non-strenuous activity within a couple of days.
Unlike other procedures, LINX requires no alteration to the stomach, reduces gas and bloating and preserves the ability to belch and vomit. While designed to be a lifelong treatment, LINX can be removed using a minimally invasive procedure that generally lasts less than an hour. Moreover, it doesn’t limit your future treatment options.
Talk to your doctor to see if LINX could be a revolutionary treatment option for your GERD or other swallowing disorder. To schedule an appointment with our Summa Health medical and surgical specialists, call 330.761.1111.
