Support groups are held on a monthly basis for patients considering weight loss surgery and patients who have undergone weight loss surgery. Summa’s Bariatric Care Center offers this group at the Summa Akron City Hospital campus.

The purpose of the support group is to help each weight loss surgery patient reach the best possible outcome, where nutrition, exercise and behavior modification are reinforced at every meeting. The support group gives patients an opportunity to discuss personal or professional issues that arise from weight loss surgery, and/or from their history of obesity. The group also allows patients to surround themselves with people who understand and support their goals, and helps them develop realistic expectations while learning behavior modification skills.

The group is designed for the patients, and is facilitated by Bariatric Care Center staff. Patients are given the opportunity to participate and to help administer some aspects of the group. An agenda is prepared for each meeting, which includes a topic for discussion as well as ample time for sharing.

Support Group meetings are generally held the 4th Wednesday of each month, with the exception of July, November and December. Meetings are located in the Professional Building South, 55 Arch Street on the Summa Akron City Hospital Campus. The PODS are located in the basement of the Professional Building. (Directions)
