|Dr. Michelle Blanda of Summa Health System receives the Emergency Physician of the Year award from Gary Katz, M.D., immediate past president of the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
AKRON, Ohio, July 7, 2011– Summa Health System’s chair of Emergency Medicine recently won a state-wide award recognizing her for quality patient care, for high professional standards and for being a role model in the emergency medicine field.
Michelle Blanda, M.D., FACEP, professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and service line director of Emergency Medicine and Trauma Services, was presented with the Emergency Physician of the Year award by the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) at the Ohio ACEP annual meeting in June. This prestigious award recognizes clinicians of merit and encourages members to pursue the ideals of emergency medicine.
“Michelle leads by example, has a tenacious drive, is receptive to the input of her colleagues and celebrates the successes of those whom she mentors,” said Gary Katz, M.D., Ohio ACEP immediate past president. “I trained under Dr. Blanda in my residency at Summa, and to this day, when dealing with cases, I often ask myself, ‘What would Dr. Blanda do?’”
Dr. Blanda became the first female physician to chair a medical department at Summa Health System in 2004 and was also the first woman chief of staff. In addition, she serves as an attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Summa Akron City, Summa St. Thomas and Summa Western Reserve Hospitals. She is also a professor of Emergency Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University.
With leadership from Dr. Blanda and the Department of Surgery, Summa Akron City Hospital was the first in the Akron area to be verified as a Level I Trauma Center in 1998. Along with leaders in cardiology, Dr. Blanda was also instrumental in guiding Summa Akron City Hospital in receiving Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers last year.
Dr. Blanda and other physicians and administrators are currently leading Summa Health System’s emergency network expansion plan that involves building new emergency departments at the Summa Health Center at Lake Medina and at the Summa Health Center at Green. The plan will also add capacity to emergency departments at Summa Akron City, Summa Wadsworth-Rittman and Summa Barberton Hospitals. Summa’s network also includes emergency departments at Summa St. Thomas and Summa Western Reserve Hospitals as well as Robinson Memorial Hospital, an affiliate of Summa Health System. More than 226,000 emergency cases were treated across the system last year.
Dr. Blanda graduated from The University of Toledo College of Medicine. She lives in Peninsula with her husband and their three teenage children.
