Robotic Surgery

Summa Health System is an innnovator in the area of advanced minimally invasive surgery. Using the daVinci® robotic system, our team offers a wide variety of minimally invasive robotic procedures for patients requiring cardiac, gynecological, urological and general surgical and bariatric treatment. Our highly experienced surgeons lead the market with surgeon training, including fellowships in robotic and advanced minimally invasive surgery.

What is robotic surgery?
It is a robotically-assisted surgical system that provides surgeons with a three-dimensional view of the surgical field – along with intense magnification and high definition images of the surgical area - by using only a small incision in the body. The robotic instruments have flexible ends with a greater range of motion than that allowed by the human wrist. This technology improves the surgeon’s vision and control, with the overall result being a greater range of motion and more precise control of the instruments by the surgeon. This equipment, coupled with the skill of the surgeon using it, allows even some of the most delicate surgeries to be performed using this new technology.

Breakthrough Technology:
In May 2012, Summa Health System became the first health system in the tri-county area to offer a single-port robotic-assisted gall bladder removal surgery that is virtually scar-free!
How is this possible? Through a tiny incision in the belly button (single-port), our highly trained robotic surgeons remove the gall bladder and get patients back on their feet in no time.

With this new technology patients can expect:

  • Fewer complications
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Reduced blood loss during surgery
  • A shorter hospital stay
  • Less risk of infection
  • Higher patient satisfaction
  • Quicker return of the patient to normal activities
  • Minimal scarring (i.e., a virtually 'scar-free' procedure)

If you are experiencing abdominal pain or have seen a physician who has indicated that your gall bladder needs removed, please call (888) 567-4586 to set up a consultation with one of our surgeons to see if you are eligible for this surgery.

Other Robotic Procedures Available:

Summa also specializes in a variety of other minimally invasive robotic surgeries. These surgeries allow physicians to perform many types of procedures through tiny incisions less than an inch long. These procedures include the following categories:

 Bariatric

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy

Cardiac

  • Heart Arrhythmias
  • Heart Tumors
  • Lead Placement for Pacemakers and Defribrillators
  • Mitral Valve Repair and Replacement

Colon

  • Benign and malignant surgery on the colon and rectum

General Surgery

  • Adrenalectomy
  • Appendectomy
  • Anti-Reflux Surgery
  • Hysterectomy
  • Myomectomy
  • Ovarian Cystectomy
  • Splenectomy

Gynecology

  • Endometriosis
  • Ovarian Cancer
  • Uterine Cancer
  • Uterine Fibroids

Thoracic

  • Lung Cancer
  • Myxoma
  • Lobectomy

Urology

  • Prostatectomy
  • Partial Neprectomy
  • Pyeloplasty
  • Dismembered Pyeloplasty

For most patients, a minimally invasive surgical approach offers substantial benefits, including:

  • Less pain following surgery
  • Reduced blood loss during surgery
  • Reduced need for blood transfusions
  • A shorter recovery time
  • Minimal scarring and less internal scar tissue buildup
  • Less risk of infection
  • A shorter hospital stay
  • Quicker return of the patient to normal activities

Minimally invasive robotic surgery may not be the best option for everyone. Your physician can explain all of the options available to treat your condition, including whether you’re a good candidate for minimally invasive robotic surgery.
