Laurel Parkins-Turner, Cardiology Patient

Summa Health's cardiology team helped Laurel after being diagnosed with peripartum cardiomyopathy.

Laurel: "My pregnancy with my twins was extremely difficult. I had shortness of breath and extreme fatigue.

My OB thought it was preeclampsia that would be resolved with the birth of my twins. But when the girls were born at Summa Health, my condition worsened.

The cardiologist, Jonathan Buggey diagnosed me with a very serious condition called peripartum cardiomyopathy. Which is heart failure due to the pregnancy itself. I required defibrillation and CPR, and I ended up spending a week in ICU. Dr. Buggey and his team tried everything they could for the best outcome.

Nine months later, I have function of my heart back and I can manage my symptoms with medication. But the best news is I get to be a healthy mom to my babies, Adeline and Juneau, and I love them so much. I'm so grateful for Dr. Buggey and team at Summa Health."
