Summa Health – headquartered in Akron, Ohio – is one of the largest integrated healthcare delivery systems in the state. Formed in 1989 with the merger of Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals, our health system has 8,500+ employees; nearly 1,000 credentialed physicians; and buildings and facilities totaling more than 3 million square feet across all our campuses.
In 2024, Summa Health signed a definitive agreement to become part of HATCo. Upon closing the transaction in 2025, Summa Health moved from its non-profit origins to become a for-profit health system. As part of the agreement, HATCo is investing significant resources to build upon Summa Health’s existing strengths and capabilities. Together, Summa Health and HATCo seek to incorporate innovative technology solutions and best practices to eliminate barriers, empower people to live their healthiest lives and reshape and improve the future of healthcare delivery.

Summa Health provides services to a five-county area – Summit, Medina, Portage, Stark and Wayne – within Northeast Ohio. With medical services organized under the umbrella of Summa Health System, we have served millions of patients in comprehensive acute, critical, emergency, urgent care, outpatient and long-term/home-care settings.

Summa Health is committed to offering a full continuum of compassionate coordinated care. Our services follow patients from preventive care through medical incidents, rehabilitation and maintenance. With care being coordinated among all of our providers – primary physicians, surgeons, therapists, etc. – conditions have a greater chance of being detected and treated earlier, which typically result in better outcomes for our patients.
