On May 24, 2023, nearly 350 guests gathered at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn for an evening marked by gratitude and recognition. The annual Summa Society Celebration is a special evening during which Summa Health thanks the benefactors and volunteers whose service and support make a difference in the lives of thousands of patients in Akron and its surrounding communities.
Dr. Cliff Deveny, president and chief executive officer of Summa Health, was joined by George Strickler, chair of the Summa Health Board of Directors; Julia Rea Bianchi, chair of the Summa Health Foundation Board of Directors; and Jessica Hudson, president of Summa Foundation and chief development officer of Summa Health, in thanking guests.
Also at the celebration, Dr. Thomas “Tom” File Jr. was awarded Summa Health’s Distinguished Physician Award, the health system’s highest physician honor, in grateful recognition of his 44 years of service. Dr. File was honored for his outstanding leadership and dedication, his clinical excellence and his personal commitment to advancing philanthropy at Summa Health.
During a private reception earlier in the evening, the late Marjorie B. and John J. Hartz, the Sharon and Richard Juve Family, the Thomas A. and Jeanne L. LaRose Family and the late Dr. Juan M. and Angelina P. Perdomo were inducted into the Thomas W. Cornell Philanthropic Leadership Society, which recognizes benefactors who have given $1 million or more to Summa Health. The society is named in honor of the first president of Akron City Hospital’s board of trustees and founding benefactor.
