Dr. Sue Espinal, a Summa Health gynecologist, and Dr. Eric Espinal, a cardiothoracic surgeon, chief surgical officer and the vice president of Surgical Affairs, have generously supported general surgery residency and education, palliative care, and the Summa Health Cancer Institute throughout their careers. Sue is a Patroness member of The Circle of Women’s Health Philanthropists. Eric serves as the physician chair of the Summa Health Surgical Services Leadership Council.
We have been a part of the Summa Health family since we met during our residency and began our practice as attending physicians in 1999. Over the past 24 years, the thing that has remained constant at Summa has been a culture of caring. The doctors care about their patients and, conversely, the patients really care for their doctors. With over 300 residents training in over 20 specialties, patient care grows because of the exchange of new ideas and an academic environment. We enjoy having a part in training the physicians who will help care for our family in the future.
We have a deeply personal connection. Giving is a way to express gratitude and support for the institution that has positively impacted our lives and the lives of our loved ones. We support quality health care. Hospitals rely on philanthropic support to invest in state-of-the-art equipment, attract talented medical professionals and offer innovative treatment options. Our contributions directly impact the hospital’s ability to provide exceptional care to patients. Also, we want to advance medical research and innovation and help address healthcare disparities.
Physician philanthropy plays a crucial role in supporting hospitals like Summa Health. Gifts can be directed to community outreach programs aimed at improving access to healthcare services, promoting preventive care and raising awareness about important health issues. These initiatives may also provide medical services to underserved populations by providing financial assistance to patients who are unable to afford care. Finally, when physicians contribute to Summa Health’s philanthropic endeavors, they demonstrate their commitment to and actively participate in achieving the hospital’s mission.
