Turning grief into comfort: Dana North’s mission to help cancer patients

After her husband, Greg, passed away in 2020,
Dana North channeled her pain and grief into supporting patients, their families and staff at the
Summa Health Cancer Institute, where Greg was initially diagnosed and treated for leukemia in 2013 by Dr. Andrew Haas.
In the wake of Greg’s death, Dana established The North Foundation in his memory. During their own difficult journey, Dana recognized the powerful impact that the support of family, friends and community had on her family. Inspired by this experience, she wanted to ensure that others in similar situations would never feel alone.
“We want to help lessen the worry during cancer treatments and provide comfort and distraction during the difficult and emotional time of being in the hospital,” said Dana. “I know from my experience that families endure a great deal of stress while waiting in hospital rooms for hours at a time. It was the little things that meant so much to me.”
Every quarter, volunteers from The North Foundation distribute 10 Comfort Boxes to families of inpatient oncology patients at Summa Health. The boxes, which contain cozy blankets, puzzles, games, treats and toiletry items, offer a small but meaningful way to provide comfort during a difficult time.
In addition to delivering the Comfort Boxes, volunteers also visit each
Summa Health Outpatient Infusion Center every week or two to refill Joy Baskets with snacks. Once a month, they deliver cases of water to the Jean and Milton Cooper Pavilion at the Summa Health System – Akron Campus.
During Christmas, Dana prepares special baskets for staff at each infusion center, filled with donuts or cookies, as well as healthier options like mac and cheese cups, tuna and fruit.
Through these meaningful outreach efforts, Dana finds solace and joy. “The reaction we get when we walk into the infusion centers is so enthusiastic. Everybody embraces us. Hearing how this act of love has affected families touches your heart unbelievably. I believe that is why we are here in this world – to help one another.”
