Elaine Shannon-SmithElaine Shannon-Smith:

Expressing gratitude to Summa Health caregivers in memory of her daughter

This story originally appeared in the Fall 2023 edition of Promise magazine.

The Jessica (Smith) Badger Gratitude Fund could not be more aptly named.

“From the time Jessie was a little girl,” said her mother, Elaine Shannon-Smith, “she was always grateful—sending thank you cards and even thanking me for making dinner.” Jessie’s sense of gratitude continued even when she was diagnosed with cancer and then treated for the next 13 years, mostly at Summa Health.

“Jessie would always say how grateful she was for the kindness shown to her by the staff of Summa Health’s acute palliative care and inpatient oncology floors.” From nursing management to the housekeeping staff, “each person was caring, professional, knowledgeable and even creative in providing care and support to the whole family.”

Jessica’s care team was instrumental in keeping her alive for almost 13 years beyond her initial diagnosis. “I realized that was my miracle,” said Elaine.

As an educator, Elaine said she could not think of a better way to honor her daughter’s memory than by establishing a fund that provides education and training opportunities for staff development in the oncology and palliative care units. A plaque located on 7 East (shown here) reminds staff of the gift made in gratitude of their compassionate care.

“It was beyond amazing that all the Summa Health caregivers were able to make this unbearable time bearable. I want them to know that what they do really makes a difference.”
