The dedication of The Women’s Board of Summa Health has significantly impacted the lives of community members and the development of healthcare professionals since 1892. Members have contributed more than $8.1 million and provided over 350,000 hours of volunteer service to the health system, exemplifying a commitment to healthcare excellence and community well-being.

The Women’s Board has consistently been at the forefront of supporting vital programs at Summa Health, most recently the innovative Smart Start Program. This initiative is a cornerstone in Summa Health’s mission to foster the growth of healthcare professionals and ensure a robust workforce for the future. Through Smart Start, Summa Health employees can expand their knowledge and clinical expertise in partnership with local colleges, aspiring to roles such as associate registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and other vital healthcare positions.

“We are deeply grateful for the ongoing support of The Women’s Board of Summa Health. Their contributions have been instrumental in advancing our mission and directly enhancing the quality of care we provide,” said Dr. Cliff Deveny, Summa Health president and CEO.

“Their recent support of the Smart Start Program is a testament to their commitment to nurturing talent and ensuring that Summa Health remains a beacon of hope and excellence in healthcare,” he said.

The Women’s Board also has played a significant role in advancing nursing education, contributing annually to Summa Health’s scholarship fund for nurses. Their enduring support has been pivotal in Summa Health achieving Magnet status, recognized nationally as the gold standard of nursing excellence.

Other compassionate initiatives extend to patient care, providing comfort items such as bereavement baskets, soft robes, snacks, holiday tray favors and multicultural books. These thoughtful gestures have brought solace and dignity to patients during their most vulnerable times.

The Boniface DeRoo Award for Philanthropy, which the members of The Women’s Board received in 2019, is a reflection of the profound impact of their philanthropy and volunteerism. This prestigious award, Summa Health’s highest philanthropic honor, recognizes individuals and groups that demonstrate the spirit of selfless giving and service.
