Urologic Cancers

Urologic cancers are growths of abnormal cells that form in the organs of the urinary tract in both males and females (mainly bladder and kidneys), and in the testicles, prostate and penis of the male reproductive system. Most of the time, symptoms don’t occur until the cancer has become more advanced. Then, they depend on the type of cancer. However, some things to watch for include:

• Trouble with urination 
• Weak urine stream or interruption of stream

• Painful urination or ejaculation
• Blood in the urine
• Blood in the semen

More often, these cancers are detected during a routine physical exam of the abdomen or genitals. 

Preventive Screenings

The most common cancer in males is prostate cancer. If you are greater-than-average risk should discuss with your doctor the potential risks and benefits of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening, starting at age 40. High risk includes males who have a father, son or brother with a history of prostate cancer, who are of African-American heritage or are experiencing symptoms. Males at average risk should discuss whether or not a PSA screening is right for them beginning at age 55.

Treatment

Treatment for urologic cancer depends on several factors, such as the tumor’s grade and stage and the patient’s preference. Common options include surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation therapy. 

Since prostate cancer often occurs in older males, doctors may recommend an “active surveillance” or a “watchful waiting” strategy, in which they regularly monitor the patient and provide treatment only if the cancer progresses. This strategy helps to preserve the quality of life.
