Magnet Recognition Program®

The Magnet® program recognizes Summa Health for its commitment to nursing excellence, exceptional patient care and a culture of continuous improvement.

What is Magnet®?

The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® is the highest credential a healthcare organization can achieve. A Magnet designation indicates to patients and the public that these organizations have met the most stringent, evidence-based standards of nursing excellence in patient care delivery. Summa Health System — Akron Campus was designated as a Magnet organization in 2011, 2016, and 2021 by the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® and is now applying for re-designation. We invite patients, family members, staff and other interested parties to provide feedback via email or direct mail. For information on how to submit feedback, please click here to view the full public notice.

Achieving Magnet  Status

Organizations seeking Magnet status undergo a thorough evaluation process, including an application, written documentation of patient care and outcomes, and an onsite visit by ANCC experts. It is not a permanent award; Summa Health must reapply for recertification every four years to maintain the designation.

Commitment to Standards

Achieving and maintaining Magnet status requires more than meeting standards – it takes a continuous commitment to excellence. From improving patient outcomes to enhancing work environments, our nurses play a key role in driving positive change throughout the organization.

Here are several ways we demonstrate Magnet qualifications:

  • Healthy work environment improvements leading to a reduction in RN turnover and RN engagement in the emergency department
  • Clinical Nurse involvement in:
    • Population health volunteering opportunities
    • The redesign of ED triage leading to a reduction in patients left without treatment
    • The selection of new central line dressing kits led to a reduction in central line associated blood stream infections
  • Creation of learning events for the community based on patient feedback
  • De-implementation of process and procedures due to updated evidence-based practices
  • Nurse involvement in handoff processes leading to a reduction in emergency department length of stay
  • Onsite certification review classes

Significance of Magnet Recognition

Being recognized as a Magnet-designated organization indicates to patients, families, and staff that we are committed to providing high-quality care, supporting professional nursing practice, and continually improving outcomes. This designation underscores our dedication to standards, fostering a supportive environment for nurses and promoting positive changes at all levels of care.
