Hip Replacement

Summa Health orthopedic specialists take a conservative approach to hip pain, often beginning with nonsurgical treatments such as rest, physical therapy, heat or cold therapy, medications and joint injections. These options can help reduce pain, improve mobility and delay the need for surgery.

When hip pain persists and begins to interfere with daily activities, hip replacement surgery may be recommended. Hip replacement can provide lasting pain relief, restore function and help patients return to a more active lifestyle.

Surgical Approaches

Our surgeons perform hip replacement using several surgical approaches, including anterior, anterolateral, and posterior techniques. Your surgeon will recommend the approach that best fits your anatomy, condition, and recovery goals.

The direct anterior approach is a muscle-sparing technique that does not detach muscles or tendons, which may help reduce tissue disruption and support a faster initial recovery compared to traditional approaches. During surgery, X-ray guidance may be used to help ensure precise positioning of the implant components, supporting joint stability and long-term performance.

Hip Replacement

A hip replacement procedure commonly uses durable, modern implant materials such as titanium components and highly cross-linked polyethylene liners. Many implants are designed to be cementless, allowing bone to grow into the implant for long-term fixation.

Modular components may also be used to help tailor the replacement to each patient and support future revision if needed. These advances in implant design and surgical technique can offer improved mobility, increased joint stability and long-lasting function – often even in younger, more active patients.

Newer techniques and technologies continue to improve outcomes, helping many patients experience a more rapid recovery and greater independence.
