Knee Replacement

Gradual wear and tear of the cartilage in the knee joint is one of the most common reasons for knee replacement. When this damage becomes severe, knee pain can make everyday activities difficult – such as walking, climbing stairs, or getting out of bed. Knee replacement can help reduce pain and improve range of motion, supporting a more active lifestyle

Why Early Evaluation Matters

Many people wait too long before consulting an orthopedic specialist. The earlier you seek care from a Summa orthopedic specialist, the more treatment options may be available, including physical therapy and injections, and the better the potential for recovery. If knee replacement is recommended, timing can be important – prolonged stiffness in the joint may make recovery more challenging.

How Knee Replacement Works

During knee replacement, the damaged surfaces of the knee are replaced with durable implant components made of cobalt chrome and highly cross-linked polyethylene. Modular components may be used to allow for easier revision if needed in the future.

Long-Term Outcomes and Follow-Up Care

Knee replacements are designed to be long-lasting, often functioning for 20 years or more. Ongoing follow-up care is recommended, including annual visits with your orthopedic specialist for evaluation and X-rays to monitor the health of the joint.
