Shoulder Fractures
Shoulder fractures occur when one or more bones in the shoulder joint break, often leading to pain, swelling and difficulty moving the arm. These injuries can range from mild cracks to more complex breaks that affect shoulder stability and function.
What are Shoulder Fractures?
A shoulder fracture is a break in any of the bones that make up the shoulder joint, including the collarbone (clavicle), upper arm bone (humerus) or shoulder blade (scapula). These injuries can affect shoulder strength, movement and overall function, depending on the severity and location of the fracture.
Causes & Risk Factors
Shoulder fractures most often occur due to sudden impact or trauma. Common causes and risk factors include:
- Falls onto an outstretched arm or directly onto the shoulder
- Sports injuries, especially in contact or high-impact sports
- Motor vehicle accidents or other significant trauma
- Older age, due to decreased bone density and increased fall risk
- Osteoporosis, which weakens bones and increases fracture risk
- Participation in high-risk or repetitive impact activities
Shoulder Fracture Symptoms
Symptoms may vary depending on the severity of the injury but often include:
- Sudden, severe shoulder pain after injury
- Swelling, bruising or visible deformity
- Difficulty moving the arm or shoulder
- Pain that worsens with movement or pressure
- Grinding sensation or inability to lift the arm
Treatment for Shoulder Fractures
Treatment depends on the type and severity of the fracture. Many fractures can be treated without surgery, while more complex injuries may require surgical repair.
- Common treatment options include:
- Immobilization with a sling or brace
- Pain management and anti-inflammatory medications
- Physical therapy to restore strength and motion after healing
- Surgical repair for severe or displaced fractures
Early evaluation is important to ensure proper healing and to help restore shoulder function as fully as possible.
