Orthopedic Trauma Care
The Summa Health orthopedic trauma team provides specialized surgical and medical treatment for severe musculoskeletal injuries caused by sudden, high-impact events. Many of these injuries require emergency or same-day surgery to stabilize bones, restore alignment and protect surrounding tissue, nerves and blood vessels. Conditions we treat include:
- Fractures, including complex or multiple breaks
- Joint dislocations
- Crush injuries
- Traumatic amputations
- Severe ligament or tendon damage
These injuries most commonly result from car accidents, falls, sports injuries, workplace accidents or violence.
Level 1 Trauma Center
Our orthopedic surgeons treat the most complex traumatic fractures through our Level I Trauma Center on the Akron Campus – verified by the American College of Surgeons as the highest level of trauma care. The Summa Health trauma team has the resources and expertise to manage the full spectrum of trauma, from orthopedic injuries to life-threatening conditions affecting multiple organ systems.
Specialized Techniques
Our orthopedic trauma team is skilled in a range of advanced surgical techniques. Summa Health System's Akron Campus was the first hospital in Ohio to use the Starr Frame, enabling minimally invasive pelvic surgery that reduces the need for large open incisions – improving outcomes and lowering the risk of complications.
