AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 19, 2019 – Summa Health announced today its Emergency Medicine Program has been given initial Accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The accreditation is effective immediately, allowing Summa to begin the recruiting process for eight new Emergency Medicine residents to come to the organization in the coming months.
“Training the next generation of physicians is, and always will be, one of the most important things we do for our community,” said Summa Health President and CEO, Dr. Cliff Deveny. “I want to thank everyone at Summa for their commitment to starting this new program and for all of the work that has gone into making today possible. I also want to thank everyone at USACS for the great care they are providing our patients and for the outstanding faculty and staff they’ve assembled as we re-launch the emergency medicine residency.”
“An emergency medicine residency at Summa is as important to the practice of emergency medicine as it is to the northeast Ohio region,” said Dr. David Seaberg, chair of the Summa Health Department of Emergency Medicine. “We are grateful for Summa’s support and we are grateful the ACGME has acknowledged the readiness of this institution and our physician faculty.”
Summa was informed of the ACGME’s decision to grant initial accreditation status on Sept. 18. It follows Summa’s application for program accreditation in April and a site visit by the ACGME in June.
“This is a great day for medical education at Summa Health,” said Dr. Cindy Kelley, Vice President of Medical Education. “In partnership with USACS, we have worked hard to resume our tradition of training the next generation of emergency medicine physicians here at Summa. We can’t wait to welcome these residents into our family.”
“I started my career 25 years ago as program director in Summa’s emergency medicine residency,” said Dr. Michael Beeson, program director for the Summa Health Emergency Medicine Residency Program. “To be here now, at the new program’s launch, is enormously gratifying. Because many of the physicians we train will stay and practice right here, it is no exaggeration to say that over time this residency will positively affect millions of lives in our community.”
