Summa Health Receives National Recognition From the American Heart Association

Date: 10/27/2020

AKRON, Ohio, October 27, 2020 – Summa Health announced today the honor of receiving national recognition from the American Heart Association for achievements in the Get With The Guidelines® quality programs. For 2020, Summa Health received three awards for outstanding stroke care.

Summa was awarded the Get With The Guidelines®: Gold Plus Achievement which recognizes our commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients.

Summa Health was also awarded the “Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus” for proven success in door to needle treatment times that exceeded the goal of 85 percent within 60 minutes, 75 percent within 45 minutes and 50 percent within 30 minutes in applicable stroke patients. To qualify for this recognition, Summa met quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment. Summa also achieved the Target Award for Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll for demonstrating at least 90 percent compliance for 12 consecutive months (calendar year) for the “Overall Diabetes Cardiovascular Initiative Composite Score” measure in stroke.

Get With The Guidelines® data registries represent 36 percent of all cardiovascular and stroke hospitalizations. Following these resources ensures patients have access to high-quality, safe, evidence-based care that saves lives and improves patient outcomes. Every year, the American Heart Association recognizes hospitals demonstrating commitment and adherence to treatment guidelines. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease and stroke are the number one and number five causes of death in the United States, respectively.
