Summa Health Reports $138.5 Million in Community Benefit

AKRON, Ohio, December 7, 2020 – Summa Health announced today that $138.5 million in community benefit was provided to area residents in 2019. These results are detailed in the system’s 2019 community benefit report.

“Taking care of the healthcare needs of our community has always come first, but as a population health-driven system, it’s so much more than just treating the obvious health concerns,” said. Dr. Cliff Deveny, Summa Health President and CEO. “Overcoming social determinants of health and improving healthcare access in the communities we serve is an important part of what we do to keep our neighbors healthy and thriving.”

Included in Summa’s delivery of $138.5 million in community benefit are:

  • $15.2 million in the net cost of traditional charity care
  • $40.3 million in unpaid costs for Medicaid patients.
  • $27.5 million for education
  • $7.4 million for research
  • $36.0 million in subsidized health services, such as traumatic stress, senior health and dental care
  • $12.1 million for community health improvement services, programs and support
