Summa Health Receives National Recognitions for Cardiology and Rectal Cancer Care

Date: 11/18/2021

AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 18, 2021 –  Summa Health announced today it recently received two national recognitions for excellence in patient care. The Summa Health System – Akron Campus was named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals for 2022 by Fortune and IBM Watson Health®. Additionally, the Summa Health Cancer Institute received accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC).

Summa Health is the only hospital system in Northeast Ohio to be named to the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals list for 2022 by Fortune and IBM Watson Health®, a business unit of IBM dedicated to the development and implementation of cognitive and data-driven technologies to advance health.

This is the third consecutive year Summa Health has achieved this recognition. The 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study identifies top-performing hospitals based on a balanced look at clinical, operational and financial metrics. Results showed Summa had better survival rates, fewer patient complications, fewer healthcare-associated infections, lower 30-day mortality and readmission rates, shorter lengths of stay and lower inpatient expenses when compared to similar hospitals.

In a separate recognition, the Summa Health Cancer Institute earned a three-year accreditation from the NAPRC, a quality program of the American College of Surgeons. Summa Health is just one of two accredited programs in Ohio, and one of only 35 accredited programs nationwide.

To achieve this accreditation, a rectal cancer center must demonstrate compliance with the NAPRC standards addressing program management, clinical services and quality improvement for patients. Centers are required to establish a multidisciplinary rectal cancer team that includes clinical representatives from surgery, pathology, radiology, radiation oncology and medical oncology.
