Summa Health Reports $132.3 Million in Community Benefit

AKRON, Ohio, December 28, 2021 – Summa Health announced today that $132.3 million in community benefit was provided to area residents in 2020. These results are detailed in the system’s 2020 community benefit report.

“Although the COVID-19 pandemic created many hardships in 2020, Summa Health remained committed to supporting the people we serve,” said. Dr. Cliff Deveny, Summa Health President and CEO. “We take pride in knowing we can improve the lives of people through strong community programs and partnerships. We look forward to continue to work tirelessly to improve the health of our entire region.”

Included in Summa’s delivery of $132.3 million in community benefit are:

  • $13.9 million in the net cost of traditional charity care
  • $36.0 million in unpaid costs for Medicaid patients
  • $21.8 million for education
  • $5.6 million for research
  • $42.1 million in subsidized health services, such as traumatic stress, senior health and dental care 
  • $12.9 million for community health improvement services, programs and support
