Summa Health’s Akron and St. Thomas Campuses Achieve Magnet® Redesignation for Nursing Excellence

Date: 09/29/2021

AKRON, Ohio, September 29, 2021– Summa Health today announced its Akron and St. Thomas Campuses achieved Magnet®  redesignation reflecting excellence in nursing, leadership and teamwork. This distinction from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) places Summa in the top eight percent of U.S. hospitals for nursing excellence.

The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes organizations that meet rigorous standards. The Akron and St. Thomas campuses were initially designated with Magnet® recognition in 2011 and redesignated in 2016. Summa’s Barberton Campus achieved its first Magnet® designation in June 2020.

Research demonstrates that Magnet® recognition provides specific benefits to healthcare organizations and the communities they serve, such as;
  • Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication.
  • Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower patient length of stay rates.
  • Higher job satisfaction among nurses.
  • Lower hospital-acquired infection rates.

“During a difficult year, our nurses and healthcare team members have remained resilient in the face of COVID, with the dedication to excel in the care we provide patients,” said Lorie Rhine, MSN, RN, NE-BC, vice president/chief nursing officer, Summa Health System – Akron and St. Thomas Campuses. “This credential is a testament to the countless contributions our nurses, in collaboration with other team members, have made through innovations in professional nursing practice.”

To achieve Magnet® recognition, the Akron and St. Thomas Campuses passed a rigorous and lengthy process including an electronic application, the collection of detailed demographic information about the organization, written documentation that describes and demonstrates how the organization meets each of the seventy-five Sources of Evidence, a site visit and a review by the Commission on Magnet® Recognition.
