Summa Health's Accountable Care Organization Achieves Significant Savings in Medicare Shared Savings Program

Date: 08/31/2021

Summa Also Achieves Quality Score of 96.8%

AKRON, Ohio, August 31, 2021 – Summa Health announced today its accountable care organization (ACO), NewHealth Collaborative (NHC), has once again been recognized for achieving a significant multi-million dollar savings in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP).

According to MSSP data for 2020, NHC saved more than $11.6 million for CMS. Of that, approximately $5.6 million will be distributed to NHC and its providers. Since 2012, NHC's high-quality performance has saved CMS a net savings of approximately $65 million, with over $27 million of that distributed to NHC and its providers.

When it comes to quality, NHC continues to be a top performer nationally. In 2020, NHC received an overall quality score of 96.8%. This score spanned three quality domains:

  • Care Coordination / Patient Safety
  • Preventive Health
  • At-Risk Population

Despite the strain of COVID-19, NHC providers were able to provide excellent care for their Medicare, beneficiaries. This was demonstrated by NHC quality performance results. For the at-risk diabetic population, results ranked NHC in the top 20% nationally and 4th in the state of Ohio. In addition, NHC had the highest savings rate since 2012 at 6.9%.

The level of consistent performance during the past eight years is directly linked to Summa's support of a strategic approach to population health, focusing on embedded care management of vulnerable populations and being committed to primary care transformation.
