NewHealth Collaborative (NHC), Summa Health’s
Accountable Care Organization (ACO), began its
operations in January 2011. It is a clinician-led ACO that
partners with communities to compassionately care for
and serve its populations in an accountable, value- and
evidence-based manner.
NHC represents more than 500 providers. It integrates the
resources of Summa Health System and Mercy Medical
Center, located in Canton, Ohio. NHC and its providers
manage the healthcare of over 80,000 lives which
includes Summa’s employees as well traditional Medicare
beneficiaries to name a few. This equates to a total
medical spend of approximately $600 million.
NHC is the only ACO in the state of Ohio to achieve
savings in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP)
in both 2013 and 2014. The work of NHC has generated
approximately $22 million in savings for Medicare, while
improving the quality of care provided to patients. Key
to its success is its focus on fundamental strategies of
primary care transformation, population-based care
management and care coordination, and enhanced
access to care and services from the primary care team.
In 2015, Summa Health and Mercy Health created
Advanced Health Select (AHS), the largest clinically
integrated network in Ohio. This “network of networks”
is currently comprised of NewHealth Collaborative,
Mercy Health Select (Mercy Health’s ACO) and
MetroHealth. Together, these organizations are on the
forefront of healthcare transformation by delivering on
the “triple aim” – better care and better community health,
at a lower cost.
