Meet Logan

Logan has always felt most at home outdoors. Whether he’s hunting, fishing or spending time with animals, country life is part of who he is. Raised on a farm, Logan grew up caring for livestock like pigs, cows and chickens – animals that he proudly showed for years at the Trumbull County Fair.

But one ordinary summer day changed everything.

After finishing work as a union electrician, Logan was driving home when he was involved in a devastating car accident. His vehicle was completely totaled. Because of the severity of his injuries, Logan was airlifted to Summa Health, home to a verified Level I Trauma Center equipped to handle the most critical emergencies.

“I was in great hands from the word go,” Logan recalls. “They told me I had a severe aortic dissection, and, honestly, it was a miracle I was even alive.”

An aortic dissection is a life-threatening condition in which the inner layer of the body’s largest artery tears, allowing blood to flow between the layers of the vessel wall. Without immediate treatment, the condition can become fatal.

John Moawad, M.D., a Summa Health vascular surgeon, and his team moved quickly to save Logan’s life. During emergency surgery, Dr. Moawad repaired the tear and implanted a stent graft to reinforce the damaged section of Logan’s aorta and restore healthy blood flow.

“The care I received – from the nurses to the doctors – was above and beyond,” says Logan.

Logan returned to Summa Health for a follow-up CT scan to ensure the stent remained securely in place. During the visit, he had the opportunity to reconnect with Dr. Moawad and personally thank him for the care that helped save his life.

Logan greeted him with a hug.

“Dr. Moawad is the reason I’m alive today,” Logan says. “That doctor is worth his weight in gold.”

Now 29, Logan says the experience changed his perspective on life. In addition to working as a union electrician and part owner of CL Livestock, he recently became a homeowner with plans to build a barn and raise livestock of his own. He also enjoys encouraging the next generation of young farmers through his work as a Trumbull County Fair board member and 4-H mentor – a purpose he returned to with a renewed sense of gratitude.

Surrounded once again by the outdoor life he loves, Logan says he no longer takes a single day for granted.

“This experience taught me life is very precious,” he says. “Live each day to the fullest.”

Summa Health. All for the better.
