Community Policing

Campus Oriented Policing @ Summa Health (COPS Program)

The Protective Services/Police department utilizes a Community Policing focused model and style to best serve our community. The department frequently engages the community through a variety of programs and events. The department is a member of the Summit County Safe Communities Coalition, the Summit County Sexual Assault Coalition, the Summit County Opiate Taskforce, the Summit County Community Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), Summit County D.U.M.P box program as well as, many others. Through each of these endeavors the department works closely with other community partners – both law enforcement and non-law enforcement – to address, respond, and create solutions to the various problems facing our community. Resulting in the agency being one of only a few agencies in Summit County to be certified and accredited by the Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board.

Further, the department participates annually – around the holidays – in the Victim Assistance Gifts of Hope Basket Delivery, Safety Forces Chaplaincy Center Holiday Basket Delivery, the Summit County Shop with a Cop program, as well as, hosts an annual Stuff-A-Cruiser event to benefit many local charities. The department hosts an annual Bike Rodeo, coordinates an Adopt-A-Cop program with our on campus and surrounding YMCA Day Care and Early Education Centers, and participates in the Special Olympics Torch Run.

Lastly, the department hosts a monthly Partner with the Patrol event which is an adaptation of the United States Department of Justice’s Coffee with the Cops initiative. Partner with the Patrol allows for campus community members to come together to discuss not only safety concerns, but, any issues on their mind and collectively we work together to develop solutions. Honor Guard and Chaplaincy Program

The Summa Health Protective Service/Police Honor Guard is a formal unit that represents the department at many events both in the community, as well as, within the Health System. These events include Police and Military Funerals, Police and Military Memorial Ceremonies, the Summit County Annual Flag Day Ceremony, numerous Parades, and presenting the colors at many community events (i.e. baseball games, Sapphire Ball, etc.). The Chaplaincy Program is a joint venture between the department and Summa Health Pastoral Care. Just as with the Honor Guard the Chaplaincy Program represents the Department at many memorials and other civic functions; in addition to providing spiritual and counseling services to members of the department free of charge. The program is coordinated by Department Chaplain Cain and Police Care Coordinator Corporal Rowe.
