Paramedic Training

Paramedics are allied health professionals who possesses the complex knowledge and skills to provide advanced emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients.

Course Information

A new 10-month class will begin at Summa Health System – Akron Campus in January 2025. The classes will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm - 10:00 p.m. Twelve hours of clinical experience are required each week bringing the total time commitment for the program to approximately thirty hours per week. Total didactic, clinical and field internship hours will be approximately 900 hours. The schedule will include a few full or partial Saturdays throughout the school year and approximately eight weekday-daytime commitments. Total hours may vary for each student based upon clinical competencies obtained.

Course Overview

The Paramedic Education Program was formed in 1979. The course prepares the student for a career in the paramedic field and to take the licensing examination for certification as a paramedic in the State of Ohio. The program is fully accredited by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of EMS, Number 324 and national accreditation by CAAHEP #60011.

Summa Health System is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

Program Goals – Minimum Expectations

To prepare Paramedics who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.
