For early operative experience, Summa is the place. From day one, our residents have unique access to a high case volume – from the routine to complex. Summa residents quickly gain the technical skills and clinical judgment needed to become the primary surgeon.
Summa's residency program has a rich history with high standards of excellence in patient care, education and research. Established in 1930, it is the oldest accredited surgical program in Ohio. The culture here is truly unique, offering the academics of a high-caliber university program in a community-based setting.
The General Surgery residency program accepts four categorical residents per year. The program also trains rotating residents from the specialties of OBGYN, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, Urology, and Family Practice, and supports a Minimally Invasive Fellowship program with one fellow per year.
With state-of-the-art technology, our residents get hands-on experience with tools such as the Xi da Vinci robot, Epic, and PACS medical imaging. And in our personal and highly respected program, residents learn from some of the brightest minds in the surgical profession – all with a passion for teaching.
