Spinal Trauma
The spinal cord is a complex network of nerves that carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Spinal trauma refers to injuries affecting the spinal cord, vertebrae or surrounding structures caused by a sudden force, impact or penetrating injury. These injuries often occur in conjunction with orthopedic trauma and may lead to partial or permanent loss of movement, sensation or function below the level of injury.
Spinal trauma most commonly results from the spine or neck being bent, twisted or compressed.
Common causes include:
- Birth injuries
- Falls
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Sports or recreational injuries
- Acts of violence
- Certain medical conditions
Symptoms of Spinal Trauma
Spinal cord injuries of any kind may result in one or more of the following:
- Loss of sensation, muscle weakness or paralysis in the trunk, arms or legs
- A pain or stinging sensation caused by damage to nerve fibers
- Exaggerated reflexes or spasms
- Difficulty breathing, coughing or clearing secretions
- Problems with heart rate and blood pressure
- Digestive problems
- Loss of bowel and/or bladder control
- Changes in sexual function, sexual sensitivity and fertility
Spinal Trauma Risk Factors
While a spinal cord injury can happen to anyone, certain factors may predispose you to a higher risk, including:
- Being male
- Being between the ages of 16 and 30
- Being older than 65
- Engaging in risky behavior
- Having a bone or joint disorder
