Childbirth and Childcare Classes

Becoming a new parent (or even one for the second time) is an exciting and sometimes intimidating time. That’s why Summa Health offers several childbirth education and parenting classes to help prepare you and your family for this momentous occasion.

Baby Care

Get hands-on training in newborn care. Practice diapering, dressing and swaddling baby dolls. Topics covered include newborn characteristics and procedures; infant nutrition; signs/symptoms of illness; crying and how to soothe your baby; colic; and basic car seat safety.

 

Breast Pumping and Back to Work

This two-hour class will cover the basics of breast pump use with a focus on returning to work and pumping.  A variety of popular models will be available for hands-on practice, or participants may bring their own pump. Your partner or significant other is encouraged to attend and learn with you.

 

Childbirth Classes

First-time parents can prepare for the physical and psychological experiences of labor, birth and postpartum. Participants will learn how to prepare for birth and delivery; natural vs. epidural assisted labor; hospital procedures; Cesarean delivery; relaxation and breathing techniques; comfort measures for labor, and postpartum. Choose which class structure works best for you: one-day marathon; two-evening marathon or three-evening series.

Car Seat Safety Class

During this class, you will have hands-on practice to gain experience positioning an infant correctly in a car seat. We will discuss proper cold-weather clothing, common car seat installation errors and the dangers of using aftermarket products. Current recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics will be reviewed. Car seat installation with a Certified Passenger Safety Technician will also be provided.

 

Come Bounce, Breathe & Relax with Me

This class teaches different position and technique to help pregnant patients throughout labor. This class is great for individuals who want to non-medicated childbirth and for those who may have medical intervention.

 

Breastfeeding Your Baby

This class teaches the basic skills for successful breastfeeding and problem-solving techniques. Topics covered include: the advantages of breastfeeding; breastfeeding basics; positioning; latch-on; breast pumps and other important facts regarding breastfeeding.

 

In-Person Class   Live Remote Class

CPR Family and Friends

This class will teach you the critical skills of the American Heart Association’s CPR methods. Learn how to perform CPR on infants, children and adults.

 

Grandparents Class

Come learn some of the latest trends in parenting. Learn about safe sleep and the benefits of breastfeeding. Join us to discuss ways to be an extension of love and support to your children as they begin this new adventure in parenting.
