Summa Health System – Akron Campus received the Healthgrades 2026 America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™, for the third consecutive year, placing us in the top one percent of all hospitals for clinical care and patient outcomes across treatment of the most common conditions and procedures. The system also received the America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award™ for the fifth consecutive year and America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award™ for the ninth consecutive year. These recognitions highlight our commitment to our mission to provide the highest quality, compassionate care to our patients and members and to contribute to a healthier community.

Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Award 2025

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association have recognized Summa Health System – Akron Campus with the Get With The Guidelines^® – Stroke Gold Plus award with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus, Advanced Therapy and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. The award recognizes our continued success in using the Get With The Guidelines® program and applying the most up-to-date evidence-based treatment guidelines to improve patient care and outcomes in the communities we serve.

2025 Chest Pain – MI Registry Award

Summa Health is among the nation’s top-performing hospitals for treatment of heart attack patients. We have demonstrated sustained achievement in the American College of Cardiology’s Chest Pain – MI Registry for two consecutive years (2023 and 2024) and performed at the highest level for specific performance measures to receive this 2025 award. Summa Health is one of only 323 hospitals nationwide to receive the platinum honor.

Antimicrobial Center of Excellence Award

IDSA Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence

The Antimicrobial Stewardship Centers for Excellence (CoE) Program promotes excellence in antimicrobial use and combating antimicrobial resistance by recognizing hospitals that effectively demonstrate excellence in this work. Possessing a CoE designation signifies a hospital has the policies and processes in place to deliver high-quality stewardship services consistently, execute novel stewardship principles and demonstrate a high-level commitment to improving antimicrobial use and reducing resistance.

Energy STAR Status

ENERGY STAR is a voluntary U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) program that delivers environmental benefits and financial value through superior energy efficiency. Through ENERGY STAR, EPA partners with businesses and public-sector organizations to transform the way that commercial buildings use energy. Summa Health recently received Energy STAR Status for the levels of efficiency that have been achieved at our Akron Campus.

Platinum Level in the Healthy Business Council of Ohio’s 2024 Healthy Worksite Recognition Program

This honor highlights our commitment to fostering employee wellness through comprehensive health promotion and wellness initiatives. Applicants are evaluated on how well their programs support employee health, boost productivity, and maintain a healthy work environment.

Cum Laude Level on Epic Honor Roll

Summa Health recently received cum laude status within Epic’s honor roll program. This program recognizes which healthcare systems effectively implement and use Epic’s electronic health records system. This is Summa Health’s first appearance on Epic’s honor roll.

2024 Carotid Care Quality Champion

The Summa Health Heart and Vascular Institute has been designated as a Carotid Care Quality Champion by the Society for Vascular Surgery® Vascular Quality Initiative® (SVS VQI). This distinguished program honors healthcare organizations across the country dedicated to improving the safety and effectiveness of vascular care through participation and engagement in VQI’s carotid artery stenting and carotid endarterectomy registries. Participation in the VQI allows Summa Health to monitor performance, benchmark outcomes and provide the best possible care for our patients.

Digital Health Most Wired Level 9

Summa Health IT&S is proud to announce our Level 9 achievement from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHiME). Among the almost 48,000 facilities represented, Summa Health distinguished itself by ranking above peers in critical categories such as analytics and data management, population health, infrastructure and patient engagement. The survey evaluates the adoption, integration, and impact of technologies across healthcare organizations, from early-stage adopters to industry leaders.

NorthCoast 99 2025

For 22 consecutive years, Summa Health System has been named as one of the 99 best workplaces in Northeast Ohio, as determined in the annual NorthCoast 99 Awards. Presented by Employers Resource Council (ERC), NorthCoast 99 is an annual recognition program that honors employers for their ability to maintain great workplaces that support the attraction, retention and motivation of top performers.

DNV Credentialed Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Program

Summa Health has been found to comply with the requirements of the VAD FCP – Ventricular Assist Device Facility Credentialing Program. Achievement of the DNV VADP credential (VADPC) validates conformance with CMS requirements and recognizes excellence in VAD implant surgery and care within the scope of VAD implant surgery and related procedures, inclusive of initial diagnostic services, surgical services, and therapies related to VAD care.

The Committee on Trauma Verified Trauma Center

Summa Health System – Akron Campus successfully verified as a Level I trauma center through June 2026. This is the American College of Surgeons' highest trauma care.

Transcatheter Valve Program Certification

In 2023, the Summa Health System – Akron Campus structural heart team received transcatheter valve re-certification from the American College of Cardiology (ACC). Transcatheter valve certification is awarded to institutions who identify quality improvement opportunities through programmatic outcomes and implement best practices. The Summa Health System – Akron Campus was the first transcatheter valve program in the State of Ohio and the ninth in the nation to be formally recognized by the ACC. A transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive procedure that helps treat aortic stenosis.

Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification

The Summa Health Joint Replacement Center of Excellence on the Barberton Campus has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The certification, offered in collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, focuses on the pre-surgical orthopedic consultation to the intraoperative, hospitalization or ambulatory surgical center admission, rehabilitation activities, and follow-up visit with the orthopedic surgeon.

Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA)

The Summa Health System – Akron Campus Emergency Department (ED) achieved bronze-level accreditation as a Geriatric ED from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) program. This signifies that we meet the interdisciplinary geriatric standards set forth by the ACEP and demonstrates our focus on delivering the highest standards of emergency care for our communities’ older adults.

HEI 2022

Summa Health is proud to be named a 2022 Top Performer by the Human Rights Campaign. The Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) is the national benchmarking tool that evaluates healthcare facilities' policies and practices related to the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees. Top Performers score between 80 and 95 of the available 100 points.

National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC)

In November 2021, Summa Health Cancer Institute earned a three-year accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons. Summa Health is just one of two accredited programs in Ohio, and one of only 35 accredited programs nationwide.

National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers

In March 2020, Summa Health Akron Campus and Barberton Campus received three year re-accreditation from The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). NAPBC is a group of national, professional organizations focused on breast health and dedicated to the improvement of quality outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast. The Summa Health Breast Multidisciplinary Clinic is proud to be an accredited partner, addressing the full continuum of cancer—from prevention to survivorship.

American College of Cardiology- Accredited Chest Pain Center

Our Akron and Barberton Campuses are accredited Chest Pain Centers by the American College of Cardiology. Akron Campus has an additional distinction of being accredited as a Chest Pain Center with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). PCI is a mechanical means of treating heart attack patients by eliminating blockages in coronary arteries.

American College of Radiation (ACR) Accreditation

Summa Health earned the prestigious American College of Radiation (ACR) accreditation in radiation oncology, demonstrating we have undergone a rigorous review process and meet nationally accepted standards of care. In addition, the Center at Summa Health Parkview Pavilion was designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiation (ACR).

American Heart Association - Accredited Heart Attack Receiving Center

Summa Health System – Akron Campus was the first Ohio hospital to receive AHA's Mission: Lifeline^® Heart Attack Receiving Center Accreditation.

American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine

The Summa Health Women's Imaging and Testing and Summa Health Medical Group – Maternal-Fetal Medicine are accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine in several areas of expertise.

Castle Connolly Top Doctors

Each year, Castle Connolly Medical compiles a list of the best doctors, major medical centers and specialty hospitals in the country. It combines peer nomination with its own research to determine the finalized list, which is published in Castle Connolly's Top Doctor Guides along with partner publications. Patients can use these lists as a resource for finding the best healthcare and physician services in their region.

Blue Distinction for Bariatric Surgery

As a Blue Distinction^® Center for Bariatric Surgery, Summa Health demonstrates a commitment to quality care, resulting in better overall outcomes for bariatric surgery patients. The Blue Distinction Specialty Care Program is a national designation program recognizing healthcare facilities that deliver quality specialty care safely, effectively and cost efficiently.

American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer

In December 2020, the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) awarded a full, three-year accreditation to the Summa Health Cancer Institute, recognizing our commitment to maintain excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.

Magnet Recognition

Summa Health System Akron & Barberton Campuses are part of only 9% of hospitals nationwide to achieve Magnet^® recognition – the highest honor for nursing excellence – from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. We've earned this “gold standard” of care thanks to our nurses' high level of patient-focused dedication and commitment to superior patient care.

Lung Cancer Screening Center of Excellence

Summa Health Lung Imaging Center was named a Screening Center of Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance for the ongoing commitment to responsible lung cancer screening.

Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program

Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program accredited Summa Health System – Akron Campus after a rigorous review process showed that we demonstrate a comprehensive commitment to a high level of care and favorable surgical outcomes.

American Heart Association - Mission: Lifeline^® Gold Plus Receiving Quality Achievement Award

Summa Health received the American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline^® Gold Plus Receiving Quality Achievement award. The award recognizes the hospital's commitment to providing quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks.

National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program

The National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program recognized our Akron Campus as a "Gold Safe Sleep Champion," the highest designation, for its commitment to best practices and education on infant safe sleep.

Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification

Summa Health System – Akron Campus is the first hospital in the greater Akron region to be awarded the Comprehensive Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission, in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA). This certification means Summa Health meets the highest level of certification for hospitals with specific abilities to receive and treat the most complex stroke cases.

Newsweek honored Drs. Naveen Arora and Joshua Nething as two of America's Best Prostate Cancer Surgeons for 2024.
Newsweek honored Summa Health Medina Medical Center for one of America's Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers 2025
