Year One

Orientation (first month):

  • New employee orientation
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) course
  • Introduction to well-woman exam and normal OB
  • Shadowing in the office
  • Buddy call

Family Practice Center

  • Patient Panel of 50-75 families, four to six patients per session
  • Residents, nurses and patients assigned to individual team
  • Transcription available for dictated progress notes

Internal Medicine (3 months):

  • Hospital's inpatient Medical Teaching Service
  • Run by family practice residents
  • Supervised by family physicians and other primary care physicians
  • All socio-economic groups and disease categories represented
  • Wide range of patient management and experience while on call

Pediatrics (3 months):

  • Three months at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron
  • Rotations include infants, toddlers and high-risk nursery

Obstetrics (2 months):

  • Provide total care: prenatal, labor, delivery and post-partum

Postpartum Center:

  • Manage and delivery of Family Practice Center patients and private patients
  • Experience in all obstetric procedures

Emergency Medicine (1 month):

  • Staffed by emergency medicine trained physicians
  • Experience in both minor and comprehensive care

Critical Care (1 month):

  • Training occurs at Summa Health System – Akron and St. Thomas Campuses
  • Learn ventilator management, line placement and critical care skills

Behavioral Science (1 month):

  • Development of brief counseling through didactics and co-counseling with director of behavioral science
  • Develop ability to identify primary psychiatric disorders requiring outside referral

Year Two

Family Practice Center:

  • 100-125 families, six to nine patients per session

General Surgery (1 month):

  • Emphasis on pre-operative and post-operative care
  • Inpatient and outpatient surgical experience available

Outpatient Surgery:

  • Emphasis is on outpatient surgery

Pediatrics (2 months):

  • One month each of emergency medicine and ambulatory clinics

Internal Medicine (2 months):

  • Hospital's inpatient Medical Teaching Service
  • Run by family practice residents
  • Supervised by family physicians and other primary care physicians
  • All socio-economic groups and disease categories represented
  • Wide range of patient management and experience while on call

Population Health (1 month):

  • POCUS training
  • SOAR (Student Run Free Clinic) at NEOMED
  • MAT (Suboxone) training
  • QI Projects
  • Other Population Health topics

Cardiology (1 month):

  • Work directly with cardiologists on consults, Critical Care Unit patients and diagnostic procedures 

Orthopaedics (1 month):

  • Outpatient training experience in a variety of settings
  • Training in physical medicine, rehabilitation, casting, splinting and physical therapy

Community Medicine (1 month)

  • Exposure to multiple community agencies
  • Patient care experiences in community clinics for underserved

Night Float (1 month)

  • 4 night calls per week
  • Hospital admissions
  • Covering the inpatient list

Antibiotic Stewardship/Dermatology (1 month)

Elective (1 month)

 


Year Three

Family Practice Center:

  • 150-200 families, nine to 12 patients per session

Internal Medicine (2 months):

  • Act as supervising senior resident to Medical Teaching Service
  • Assume responsibility for care of patients 

Sports Medicine (1 month):

  • See patients in outpatient sports medicine center
  • Learn to manage sports related injuries, rehabilitation and injury prevention

Geriatrics (1 month):

  • Multiple locations for geriatric care (hospital, office, nursing home, home)

Gynecology (1 month):

  • Opportunities for office procedures including colposcopies
  • Experience in wide range of common gynecologic problems
  • Exposure to Gynecological Surgery

Specialties (1 month):

  • Uro/Ophtho/ENT
  • Outpatient experience in private physicians' offices
  • Spend time with hospital-based audiologist and speech therapist

Electives (5 months)

Practice Management:

  • Longitudinal across all 3 years
  • Overview of all aspects of managing an office
  • Information on billing, coding, medical/legal affairs, OSHA guidelines and government regulations

Night Float (1 month)

  • 4 night calls per week
  • Hospital admissions
  • Covering the inpatient list
