Summa Health's Internal Medicine Residency program offers the perfect balance of academic rigor and community-focused training. As a university-affiliated program based at a large Level 1 trauma hospital, our residents benefit from access to advanced medical technology, a diverse patient population, and a wide range of clinical experiences—from routine care to complex, high-acuity cases.
Residents receive exceptional hands-on training in a collegial, supportive environment. Summa offers fellowships in:
These opportunities, combined with strong mentorship and academic resources, prepare our graduates for success in competitive fellowships or careers in general internal medicine, hospital medicine, or academic practice.
We are committed to continuous improvement and innovation. A recent $1.3 million renovation of our resident workspaces was designed to foster collaboration and efficiency.
Resident wellness is a core priority. We maintain a maximum 16-hour call schedule—shorter than many programs—and offer free, confidential access to mental health and wellness services through the Akron Physician Wellness Initiative.
Residents gain experience in leading-edge practices such as point-of-care ultrasound and medical simulation. Monthly hands-on workshops enhance practical skills and support clinical decision-making.
Located in northeast Ohio, Akron offers a high quality of life with low cost of living, affordable housing, and access to parks, professional sports, and cultural attractions like the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Many of our trainees choose to make Akron their long-term home.
