Since much of general internal medicine is based in an office setting, Summa has a strong ambulatory practice training component. The model unit for this part of the training is the Internal Medicine Center (IMC).
Residents see IMC patients weekly throughout their residency. The IMC includes 20 examination rooms, a conference room, library, facilities for videotaping, a laboratory and staff offices. Residents use EPIC as our clinic electronic medical record with smart phone capability for EMR access and paging system.
Residents also go outside the hospital to the office of a general internist’s private practice as part of our Community-Based Teaching Program. During the PGY II year, residents spend one-half day per week gaining this additional ambulatory care experience.
During the three years of training, the resident develops a patient panel by inheriting patients of those residents who’ve already completed the program. The resident also acquires new patients seeking a primary care physician or referred by other medical sources. Patients requiring hospital care are admitted by their resident physician under appropriate supervision. Upon discharge, these patients return to the IMC for follow-up by the same resident.
All residents spend one additional month per year in the IMC. These months are aimed at enhancing the resident’s ability to deal with the unique problems seen in ambulatory medicine. Particular attention is given to behavioral medicine, office management, physician/patient interactions, geriatrics and management of chronic problems including nursing home patients and home care.
