Gastroenterologists may assist in the diagnosis of a digestive cancer. They have extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon) and biliary system (e.g. liver, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts). They often participate in the care during treatment and can help manage symptoms that may arise in the digestive tract both due to the cancer itself, and those that occur as side effects of one of the treatments.
