How to Message a Provider in MyChart

Have a question for your doctor but don't want to wait on hold? MyChart's secure messaging feature lets you send non-urgent messages directly to your Summa Health care team — and receive a reply right in your inbox, usually within 1–3 business days.

What is MyChart secure messaging?

MyChart messaging is a secure way to communicate with your healthcare providers without a phone call or office visit. It's ideal for:

  • Asking follow-up questions after an appointment
  • Requesting a referral or specialist recommendation
  • Reporting minor symptoms or side effects
  • Asking about test results or medications
  • Requesting forms, letters, or documentation

Secure messaging is for non-urgent questions only. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 immediately. For urgent (but not emergency) needs, call your provider's office directly.

  5. Type your message in the subject and message fields. Be clear and specific.
  6. Attach any relevant documents or images if needed.
  7. Click "Send."

Tips for Writing Effective MyChart Messages

  • Be specific. Include relevant details like the name of a medication, symptom duration or the appointment it relates to.
  • One topic per message. If you have multiple questions, consider sending separate messages so each one can be routed to the right team member.
  • Don't expect an immediate reply. Providers and their clinical staff typically respond within 1–3 business days.
  • Check your inbox. Replies will appear in your MyChart Messages inbox and may also trigger a notification based on your communication preferences.

What happens after you send a message?

Your message is routed to the appropriate care team member — often a nurse or medical assistant who triages messages on behalf of your provider. They may respond directly or consult with your physician before replying. You'll receive a MyChart notification when a response is available.
