A Welcome Letter from Program Director, Dr. Dunn

Melanie Bortell, D.O.

Welcome to the Summa Health Interventional Cardiology Fellowship website, and thank you for your interest in our program!

Summa Health is one of the largest Integrated Healthcare Delivery Systems in the state of Ohio.  Formed in 1989 with the merger of Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals, this nonprofit system now encompasses a network of hospitals, community-based health centers, a health plan, a multi-specialty group practice, an accountable care organization, research and medical education, and a foundation.  We serve more than one million patients throughout our five-market region each year in comprehensive acute, critical, emergency, outpatient and long-term/home-care settings and represent more than 1,300 licensed inpatient beds.  With several residencies and fellowships, as well as an affiliation with several universities and medical schools including Northeast Ohio Medical University, Summa has a strong history of and commitment to medical education and research.  The Summa Health Heart and Vascular Institute is currently engaged in, and in some cases leading, a number of prominent clinical trials.

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Summa Health is a one-year program, accredited by the ACGME, accepting 3 fellows per academic year.  Our first class of fellows started in July 2022.  The fellowship focuses on coronary and structural interventions, with opportunities in peripheral vascular intervention.  Summa Interventional Cardiology fellows become highly skilled in coronary interventions, coronary imaging, hemodynamic support devices, as well as advanced interventional therapies in the treatment of pulmonary embolism.  Fellows also receive robust structural interventional training including TAVR, MitraClip, and ASD/PFO closure.

In line with Summa’s commitment to academic endeavors, the Summa Interventional Cardiology fellows have the opportunity to participate in research and to present at state and national conferences.  Interventional Cardiology fellows will also routinely interact with Summa’s 12 Cardiovascular Disease fellows.

We are excited to have the opportunity to participate in training future interventional cardiologists.  The Summa Interventional Cardiology Fellowship provides a collegial, high-volume, and cutting edge environment which is well-positioned to train excellent clinicians and future leaders in the field.

Sincerely,

Justin M. Dunn, MD MPH, FACC FSCAI
