The Role of Medication in Addiction Recovery
Summa Health offers a broad spectrum of specialized addiction services, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT). MAT uses FDA-approved medications, in combination with counseling, to provide a “whole-patient” approach to treat those addicted to alcohol, opioids, methamphetamine and other substances. In general, MAT works in the brain to manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

Medications Available
The Summa Health MAT clinic offers a full spectrum of medications to treat substance use disorders that includes oral and sublingual formulations as well as long- term injectable medications that are one of the most popular and effective ways to maintain sobriety.
Vivitrol® (naltrexone for extended-release injectable suspension), is a once-monthly injection that does not lead to physical dependence. It reduces cravings and feelings of euphoria for individuals with alcohol and/or opiate addiction.
The Clinic also offers two long-acting formulations of buprenorphine, Sublocade® and Brixadi®.
Sublocade®, also administered as a once-monthly injection, is a form of opioid replacement therapy that safely replaces the drug of dependence to reduce cravings and prevent withdrawal.
Brixadi®, a newer medication, also can be used to treat moderate to severe opioid addiction. It is available in a once-a-week or a once-a-month injection.
In conjunction with the team of addiction medicine physicians providing medication-assisted treatment in an office-based setting, Summa Health also offers several medications to clinically qualifying patients who desire pharmacological assistance as they progress along the path toward recovery. These medications can help with insomnia, nightmares, anxiety, restlessness and other symptoms that often accompany the early stages of recovery.
