Substance Use

Drug addiction, also called substance use disorder (SUD), is a medical condition characterized by the problematic use of substances such as alcohol, illicit drugs or prescription medications. It is a complex condition involving a compulsive pattern of drug use despite harmful consequences.

Symptoms may include:
  • Feeling that you have to use the drug regularly — daily or even several times a day
  • Having intense urges for the drug that block out any other thoughts
  • Over time, needing more of the drug to get the same effect
  • Spending money on the drug, even though you can't afford it
  • Not meeting obligations and work responsibilities, or cutting back on social or recreational activities because of drug use
  • Continuing to use the drug, even though you know it's causing problems in your life or causing you physical or psychological harm
  • Doing things to get the drug that you normally wouldn't do, such as stealing
  • Failing in your attempts to stop using the drug
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you attempt to stop taking the drug

SUD can range from mild to severe and can lead to significant impairment in various aspects of an individual's life, including physical health, mental health, relationships and overall functioning. It is considered a chronic condition that requires comprehensive treatment, including medical, psychological and social interventions.

Every person’s experience with substance use disorder is unique, so treatment plans are most successful when they’re tailored to individual needs. Summa Health Behavioral Health Institute offers the full spectrum of levels of care for treatment.

Inpatient Detoxification Program

Inpatient Detoxification Program

This 14-bed, acute care inpatient unit provides alcohol and chemical dependency detoxification for adults. Each room is private. The unit contains two rooms respectively designed to host group activities and provide addiction-focused education.

First Step Addiction Treatment

Emergency Room

The First Step addiction program at Summa Health’s Akron, Barberton, Green and Wadsworth Emergency Departments (ED), made available through a partnership with the United Way of Summit County and other community agencies, allows patients to receive help 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The First Step addiction program initiates addiction treatment right in the ED. In a single visit, we can treat your symptoms and ease cravings, as well as provide onsite care coordination to ensure that you don’t leave our hospital without the next treatment option in place.

Outpatient

Some patients need support for substance use disorder on an outpatient basis. Summa Health Behavioral Health Institute offers several options.

Addiction IOP

Addiction IOP

The Summa Health Addiction Medicine Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a group therapy treatment program for those with alcohol or substance use disorder diagnoses. Available days or evenings, the program runs three days a week, three hours a day, for an average of 15 to 20 sessions. There also is a dual diagnosis track for those whose addiction recovery is significantly impacted by mental health symptoms of depression, anxiety and trauma. Summa Health’s program supports both abstinence-based and harm-reduction treatment programs. Summa Health encourages the use of the 12-step recovery model, as well as family involvement in the treatment process.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)

Specialty Services

Summa Health offers a broad spectrum of specialized addiction services, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT). MAT uses approved medications, in combination with counseling, to provide a “whole-patient” approach to treat those addicted to substances such as alcohol, opioids and methamphetamines. In general, MAT works in the brain to manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings. In conjunction with the team of addiction medicine physicians providing medication-assisted treatment in an office-based setting, Summa Health also offers a nurse-led injection clinic that provides Vivitrol® (naltrexone), Sublocade® (buprenorphine) and Brixadi® to clinically qualifying patients who desire pharmacological assistance as they progress along the path toward recovery.
