The Summa Health Joint Replacement Center of Excellence recently earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The certification, offered in collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, focuses on the pre-surgical orthopedic consultation to the intraoperative, hospitalization, or ambulatory surgical center admission, rehabilitation activities, and a follow-up visit with the orthopedic surgeon. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects Summa Health’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.
With a mission to help eliminate pain and restore function to joints, the Summa Health Joint Replacement Center of Excellence offers the latest in robotic surgery and innovative procedures. Both total knee replacement and total hip replacement patients benefit from a recently expanded same-day surgery and recovery area, a new preadmission testing department, and six operating rooms with quality-enhancing technology, such as digital hip navigation and minimally invasive anterior hip replacement surgery.
The Summa Health Joint Replacement Center of Excellence also is the first in the region to utilize the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution, which provides a variety of advanced technologies to perform highly accurate and precise knee replacement surgery. It is designed to provide insights for real-time decision making; help remove the damaged bone with accuracy; and gather necessary data about your anatomy through an infrared camera and optical trackers for a higher level of precision.
Compared to traditional methods, robotic-assisted technology has shown to deliver a greater range of motion, less pain and faster recovery times for patients of total joint replacement surgery.
Focused on eliminating pain and restoring joint function, our collective multidisciplinary team – made up of skilled providers and experienced administrators – works closely with patients to diagnose problems and customize individualized treatment solutions.
The Summa Health Joint Replacement Center of Excellence surgical team is led by Medical Director Kiel Pfefferle, M.D., total joint reconstruction surgeon; Ryan Combs, M.D., total joint reconstruction surgeon. Liz Householder BSN, RN, ONC, is the center’s orthopedic nurse navigator.
Whether a patient needs a total knee replacement or total hip replacement, the Summa Health Joint Replacement Center of Excellence provides a dedicated orthopedic nurse navigator to guide patients through each phase of care. We also offer educational support through the Joint Effort Academy, an engaging and comprehensive preoperative program to improve patient understanding and outcomes of knee replacement and hip replacement surgery.
The Summa Health Joint Replacement Center of Excellence was part of a $1.4 million investment in Barberton Campus’s surgical services. This 7,235-square-foot, cutting-edge center was designed with the orthopedic patient in mind, making convenient access to total hip replacement and total knee replacement services a top priority. Great measures have been taken to ensure a convenient, seamless experience – from the time total joint replacement surgery patients first arrive for education through their post-op appointments.
