About the Art and Artist

Dale Chihuly’s King’s Blue Persian Set with Scarlet Lip Wrap is a striking example of his pioneering approach to sculptural blown glass. Designed to be viewed from multiple angles, the work invites close observation of its undulating forms and luminous jewel-toned colors. The scarlet lip wrap accentuates the delicate, curling edges, highlighting the interplay of transparency and saturation that is characteristic of Chihuly’s Persian series.

The Persian series, which Chihuly began in the mid-1980s, represents an exploration of form, color, and texture. Created in collaboration with skilled glassworkers, these pieces are shaped by inflating molten glass in ribbed optical molds, producing dynamic, asymmetrical compositions. The series title references historical influences spanning from the Middle East to Venice, both of which have long been centers of glassmaking innovation.

This work includes smaller elements Chihuly refers to as “tear catchers.” While historically glass vessels were often used for perfumes, this evocative name speaks to the poetic and emotional qualities inherent in his creations.

Chihuly’s Impact and Legacy

Dale Chihuly portrait

Dale Chihuly is one of the most celebrated glass artists of our time. His contributions to contemporary glass art are unparalleled, from his role in co-founding Pilchuck Glass School in Washington to his large-scale installations across the globe. His work is renowned for its bold use of color, intricate craftsmanship, and ambitious scale.

Despite a life-changing accident in 1976 that left him blind in one eye, Chihuly’s vision, both artistic and conceptual, continued to shape the world of glassmaking. His ability to adapt and lead collaborative teams of glass artists has allowed him to push the boundaries of the medium, inspiring generations of artists worldwide.

Where to See More

Chihuly’s work can be found in major collections around the world. One of the largest holdings is at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, where his installations have become iconic. Closer to home, the University of Akron features a 30-foot Chihuly sculpture in front of the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. Created in transparent urethane, rather than glass, this work pays homage to Northeast Ohio’s legacy in rubber and polymer innovation.

To explore more of Chihuly’s work and view his installations in various global locations, visit the artist’s official website, where you can also watch Chihuly at the Royal Ontario Museum 2016, showcasing illuminated Persians similar to those in the Summa Health collection.
