About the Art

John Pearson’s Continuum 2 Series #B introduces a striking contrast within the patient registration area of Summa Health. The work’s undulating contours echo the natural rhythms of air or water, creating a visual dialogue that flows across the canvas in graded bands of grey and steely blue. These colors suggest movement, offering a sense of fluidity that complements the otherwise static architectural environment.

At the center of the composition, two bold, neon-like rings command attention, disrupting the horizontal and vertical lines of the space around them. These vibrant elements seem to hover above the canvas, collaborating with the surrounding motion to defy the rigid lines of the built environment. The height of the wooden frame on which the canvas is stretched lifts the painting off the wall, creating a sculptural quality that invites viewers to engage with the artwork in three-dimensional space. This interaction is a hallmark of Pearson’s approach, which often includes low-relief and sculptural wall pieces.

Pearson’s work is widely recognized for its ability to modify the space it occupies through abstract color and form. Continuum 2 Series #B is a prime example of this approach, with the painting’s dynamic forms and nuanced use of color transforming the atmosphere of the room in subtle, yet impactful ways. Pearson often incorporates humor into his works, a characteristic that adds depth and intrigue to his abstract compositions.

In a 2012 Cleveland Arts Prize video, Pearson demonstrates his meticulous technique of masking areas of the canvas before applying paint, revealing the precision with which he creates the sharp lines and edges in his work. This technique, also used by other contemporary artists such as Julian Stanczak (whose work is also part of the Summa Collection), showcases Pearson’s mastery of tools and process.
