Program Leadership

Medical Director- Musculoskeletal Clinical Line of Business Integrated Health Services

Dr. Weiner began his tenure as Department Chair in 2007. Having grown up in northeast Ohio, he returned to Akron to complete his residency at Summa Health after attending the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Subsequently, he completed a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Oncology at the University of Florida. Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Weiner was recruited as the Associate Director of Residency Education at Summa, a position he maintained until becoming residency program director in 2003.

Jeffrey Junko, M.D.*
Interim Chair
Dr. Junko completed his residency in 2005 at this program, following graduation from Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2000. He then pursued a foot and ankle fellowship at the Universities of Iowa and Utah. As a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he decided to return to the midwest and assume the role of Associate Director of Residency Education at Summa Health in 2006. He was promoted to Residency Director in 2008. He was promoted to Residency Director in 2008 where he served in that role until 2026 when he was promoted to Interim Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Matthew Jaykel, M.D.*
Residency Director
Dr. Jaykel completed his residency from Western Michigan University in 2019, following graduation from Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2014. He completed his Spine Fellowship from Duke University in 2020. In 2022, he took on the role of Associate Program Director for the residency. He was promoted to Residency Director in 2026.

Eric Miller, M.D.*
Orthopaedic Trauma Medical Director
Dr. Miller completed his residency in 2008 at this program, following graduation from Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2003. He then completed a trauma fellowship in 2009 at the University of Texas Southwestern, Parkland Memorial Hospital. He is the Trauma Medical Director for the Department of Orthopaedics at Summa Health.
