Summa Health Orthopedic Institute offers easy appointment access with our orthopedic specialists. We believe getting an appointment quickly helps get you on the road to recovery faster.

All Physicians are Fellowship Trained

All of our nonsurgical physicians and orthopedic surgeons are fellowship trained in their specialty. This specialized training and extensive experience gives you peace of mind because you are choosing a physician who has significant experience in treating patients with your condition.

Convenient Locations for Rehabilitation

Summa’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Services have eight locations throughout the region to help make your recovery convenient for you.

Convenient Surgical Locations

Summa’s orthopedic surgeons perform surgical procedures in three convenient, easy-to-access locations in Akron, Barberton and Wadsworth.

Level 1 Trauma at Summa Health System – Akron Campus

Eric Miller, M.D. cares for patients at Summa Health System – Akron Campus' Level 1 Trauma Center. The Level 1 Trauma Center designation is only available under the strictest of guidelines. It means the hospital can provide all the resources necessary to provide the entire spectrum of care for the trauma patient, from orthopedic conditions to life-threatening injuries to all organs.

Our orthopedic surgeons handle the most complex traumatic fractures through the Level 1 Trauma Center and provide comprehensive care for any traumatic injury. They have the ability to treat acute injuries and any long-term after effects, helping patients resume or approach normal lives with full functionality.

Intensive Care Unit at Summa Health System – Akron and Barberton Campuses

For patients with more complex conditions, both Summa Health System – Akron and Barberton Campuses have intensive care units. This is helpful if a patient should need this level of care based on their complex conditions.

Latest Direct Anterior Approach for Total Hip Replacement

The direct anterior approach for total hip replacement performed by Kiel Pfefferle, M.D., orthopedic surgeon, helps patients recover more quickly. This approach for total hip replacements does not detach any of the muscles or tendons and therefore reduces muscle damage. This allows patients to have a faster post-operative recovery than a traditional total hip replacement.

In addition, the orthopedic surgeon uses X-ray to position the components to the best fit for the patient. This helps with preventing dislocations and chronic wear and tear on the new total hip replacement.

One of Only Seven Orthopedic Oncologists in Ohio

Summa Health Orthopedic Institute has one of the seven orthopedic oncologists practicing in the state of Ohio. As one of the few orthopedic oncologists in the state, Scott D. Weiner, M.D., sees patients from an area that encompasses northern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia.

Care is coordinated with the Summa Health Jean & Milton Cooper Pavilion at Summa Health System – Akron Campus, so patients have access to comprehensive treatment options.

Team Physicians and Medical Coverage

Summa Health Sports Medicine physicians are the team physicians for the Akron Rubber Ducks and Kent State University Athletics. We provide athletic trainer coverage to eight area schools and three area YMCAs.

In addition, it provides medical coverage for the Akron Marathon, 2014 Gay Games and OHSAA State Softball Tournament since 2007.

Our staff consists of Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association (OATA) Team Physicians of the Year, OATA Athletic Trainers of the Year and OATA Hall of Fame members.

Top-Tier Resident Education

Summa’s Orthopedic Residency program is one of the elite community-based residency programs in the nation.  Summa’s orthopedic in-training examination scores are consistently above the 90th percentile, meaning Summa’s orthopedic residents score better than 90 percent of all residents tested nationwide.  Many of the graduates of this program come back and practice in the Akron area.

In addition, Summa offers a sports medicine fellowship for two fellows per year.
