Diversity and Inclusion

Summa Health is committed to creating and sustaining an environment that actively embraces diversity and inclusion of our patients, our employees and our community partners.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Summa Health

Summa Health is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and respected. You should feel safe and welcome when you seek care or employment at Summa.

First, we must understand what diversity, equity and inclusion mean to have a similar understanding.
  • Diversity is the presence of differences among people, such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, socioeconomic status and religious beliefs.
  • Equity is the fair distribution of opportunities and resources, regardless of background or circumstances. It recognizes that everyone does not start from the same place and that some people may need additional help to achieve their full potential. This may mean providing access to education, healthcare, housing or other resources. It also means addressing the root causes of inequality, such as racism, sexism and discrimination.
  • Inclusion is welcoming, supporting, respecting and valuing all people. This means creating an environment where everyone feels they belong and can contribute to their fullest potential.

Diversity, equity and inclusion are interconnected, with equity being the goal, where everyone has a fair opportunity to succeed and have access to healthcare.

DEI Initiatives

We work to create a diverse and inclusive environment at Summa Health through a multi-faceted approach that includes internal support, accountability measures and external impact initiatives.

Summa's Three Focus Areas

Part of the intentional work and strategy of diversity, equity and inclusion led Summa to identify three focus areas:
