Didactics & Education

Our residency has a robust didactics and education program. Starting with dedicated orientation sessions during the first block of intern year, residents are supported throughout the entirety of their residency to grow and expand their medical knowledge.

Conference

Residents have protected time from 8am - 1pm every Thursday to attend conference. Conference takes place in the newly renovated Emergency Medicine Auditorium, which is located in the emergency department administrative area just beneath the ED. Our associate program director, Dr. Moore, organizes our conference schedule along with our education chief resident. Conference includes lectures from core faculty, resident-led lectures, Foundations small group activities, and guest lecturers from around the hospital system.

Simulation Lab

Residents also participate in a Simulation Day once per month in place of conference lectures. Simulation sessions are led by the simulation medical director, Dr. Pallaci, and the assistant simulation director, Dr. Moftakhar. Core faculty lead different stations throughout the simulations. Residents also have the opportunity to participate in a cadaver lab simulation session during the spring.

Reading Group

Dr. Moore organized an EM Reading Group that takes place virtually twice per month. The reading group focuses on ITE content areas to better prepare residents for ITE and ultimately EM boards. Residents are encouraged to read specific chapters prior to attending reading group, and residents answer questions throughout the lecture.

Journal Club

Residents have journal club once per month, led by our research co-directors, Dr. Mudrakola and Dr. Oskvarek. Journal club typically occurs off-campus and provides an opportunity for faculty and residents to connect and share thoughts over recent EM publications.

Supplemental Resources

Residents are provided with access to Rosh Review, Hippo Education, POCUS Focus, and PEER Prep, all at no cost to the resident. Residents are assigned monthly quizzes through Rosh Review to assess their learning and identify areas for growth throughout their residency. Residents also have free access to the USACS Efficiency Academy, as well as a USACS board preparation course provided at no cost by USACS.

Community Events

Residents have the opportunity to attend Ohio ACEP each year. Our residency participates in local initiatives such as SonoGames and Sim Wars for some friendly competition with other northeast Ohio EM residencies.
