The Summa Health Emergency Medicine Residency provides an opportunity for residents to get the entire breadth of emergency medicine experience at one of the largest and most advanced EDs in the region. Summa Health System – Akron Campus is a Level 1 Trauma Center, a Certified Chest Pain Center, and a Certified Stroke Center. Residents will also gain experience in community hospital settings while working shifts at our Barberton campus and experience with freestanding EDs while working at our Green location.
Our residency is a 36 month training experience. The program utilizes a 4-week 13 block schedule for each training year. First year residents have 6 EM blocks, with 19 shifts per block. Second year residents have 7 EM blocks, with 19 shifts per block. Third year residents have 9 EM blocks, with 17 shifts per block.
We are lucky to be located in the same city as the wonderful Akron Children's Hospital! Residents complete pediatric blocks each year of training with our partners at Akron Children's.
Residency leadership works to provide experiences that are aligned to the interests of our residents. Second year residents have the opportunity to pursue a 2 week track and a 4 week elective, and third year residents have a 4 week elective. The 2 week track is an area of interest in Emergency Medicine that is located here at Summa Health. The 4 week elective in the second year and third year of training make take place here at Summa Health or outside the hospital system. We recommend that residents use these opportunities to find an area of interest or build their skills for fellowship applications. Below is a list of popular track and elective options, but we are always open to new ideas!
Opportunities for research and scholarly activity are available all throughout your residency!
Residents are encouraged to participate in projects that are of interest to them alongside core faculty to eventually be presented with a poster or presentation at a multitude of conferences.
Conferences that have been attended and presented at in the past by previous residents include but are not limited to:
Ohio ACEP Resident Assembly
ACEP Scientific Assembly
CHEST Conference
SAEM
