PGY2 Pain Management and Palliative Care Pharmacy Residency Program

The PGY2 Pain Management and Palliative Care residency conducted by Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio offers a unique experience for the clinical pharmacist who desires advanced training emphasizing patient-centered pharmacotherapy focused on the interdisciplinary approach to symptom management. The resident will gain experience through interactions with a wide range of interdisciplinary healthcare professionals devoted to providing optimal care to patients with life-limiting illnesses. Activities include inpatient rounds with palliative care, acute pain, geriatric psychiatry, and addiction medicine inpatient consult services, on the 12-bed Acute Palliative Care/Hospice Unit, and inpatient pain stewardship. Weekly activities include involvement with the outpatient palliative care clinic conducting patient visits under a collaborative practice agreement with a pharmacy preceptor who holds a DEA license, participating as an essential member of a hospice interdisciplinary group meeting, and preparation of home hospice medications for delivery. Electives are available in trauma/critical care, emergency medicine, and service line development to enhance and customize the experience. The resident will train alongside medical fellows completing an accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program.
