PGY2 Pain Management and Palliative Care Pharmacy Residency Program

The PGY2 Pain Management and Palliative Care residency conducted by Summa Health System-Akron Campus in Akron, Ohio is accredited by ASHP and offers a unique experience for the clinical pharmacist who desires advanced training emphasizing patient-centered pharmacotherapy focused on the interdisciplinary approach to symptom management. The resident will gain experience through interactions with an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals devoted to providing optimal care to patients with life-limiting illnesses. Activities include inpatient rounds with palliative care, acute pain, geriatric psychiatry, and addiction medicine consult services, and on the 12-bed Acute Palliative Care/Hospice Inpatient Unit, inpatient pain and opioid stewardship, outpatient hematology/oncology infusion center, inpatient pain management and opioid stewardship, and weekly involvement with the palliative care clinic and hospice teams serving an average daily census of 200 patients. Electives are available in trauma/critical care, emergency medicine, academia, geriatrics clinic, and service line development to enhance and customize the experience. The resident will attend the educational activities of and train alongside medical fellows completing accredited Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Programs.

Residency Orientation (3 days), Pharmacy Operations/Medication Safety Orientation, Introductory Inpatient Palliative Care and Hospice, Inpatient Pain Consult Service, Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry, Advanced Inpatient Palliative Care, Geriatric Care, Oncology, Inpatient Chemical Dependency, Inpatient Pain Stewardship, Inpatient Palliative Care Consult Service

Elective 1 Month Rotations

Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Service Line Development

Required Longitudinal Year-long Rotations

Pharmacy Operations, Education, Practice Leadership, Palliative Care Clinic and Hospice Interdisciplinary Team, Project Management, Medication Safety
